Diet : Herbivore, eats stems, leaves, rhizomes and roots of aquatic plants and supplements its diet with mollusks and other invertebrates.
Reproduction : Mating begins in late April and continues until early June, from the age of 1 year. Females lay between June and July, on average 9 to 11 eggs, one egg per day, which she incubates for 24 to 28 days. The first flight for the ducklings occurs between 55 and 70 days after birth.
Lifespan : In nature, up to 20 years.
Predators : Almost all carnivorous mammals and birds of prey, especially raccoons, skunks and humans.
Status : Not endangered.
