Family : Bovidae
Diet : Herbivorous, feeding on grasses, moss, lichen, herbaceous plants, shrubs and other available plants.
Reproduction : The female mates between July and August starting from 2 years old. After about 8 ½ month gestation period she gives birth to one calf between April and May, and it will be weaned around 1 year later. Many variations are possible depending on the breeding conditions.
Lifespan : Up to 25 years in captivity and in the wild.
Predators : Wolves can attack the calves and the sick or wounded. Wild Yaks are still illegally hunted by man.
Status : Domestic Yak: not at risk; more than 14 million individuals.
Wild Yak: vulnerable; populations are declining.
