Harbour Seal



Phoca vitulina

Order : Pinnipedia

Family : Phocidae

Diet : Carnivore, eats mainly herring, flounder and calamary (squid species), but also several other species of fish depending on the region as well as shrimp and crab.

Reproduction : From 6 years for males and 3 or 4 years for females. Females give birth to one pup a year in May or June in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in June or July in the Arctic after a gestation of approximately 10 months including a delayed implantation of 3 months. The pup is weaned at the age of 1 month.

Lifespan : In nature, up to 25 years.

Predators : Killer whales, sharks, and in the Arctic, The polar bear.

Status : Not endangered.
