Diet : Carnivorous , feeding principally on mammals such as deer, Canadian beaver, big-horn, river otters, but also eats fish, birds, insects, fruit and carrion.
Reproduction : Sexually mature at 1 to 2 years. Mating occurs between February and March. The 5-6 pups are born between April and May after a gestation period of 9 weeks, and are weaned after 5-8 weeks.
Lifespan : Up to 15 years in the wild and 21 years in captivity.
Predators : Gray wolves, pumas, Canadian lynx, bobcats and black bears; young may also be taken by golden eagles.
Status : Abundant, not at risk. Populations increasing due to the creation of open habitat following deforestation.
