Northern green Frog



Rana clamitans melanota

Order : Anura

Family : Ranidae

Diet : Carnivore, feeding especially on insects and other invertebrates and occasionally frogs or small gartersnakes and crayfish.

Reproduction : From 2 or 3 years old, mating and egg laying takes place between June and August. The female lays from 1,400 to 5,300 eggs which will hatch in 3 to 5 days. The tadpoles metamorph during the following summer after 12 to 15 month in the larval stage.

Lifespan : Up to 10 years in captivity.

Predators : Eggs are eaten by leeches, aquatic insects and green tritons. Herons, gartersnakes, turtles, bullfrogs, certain fish, and other predators feed on the tadpoles, young and adult frogs.

Status : Least concern, populations are stable.
