Diet : Carnivore, feeding on 90% toads and frogs, but also earthworms, small fish, tadpoles and salamanders. Occasionally it consumes small birds, rodents, insects and spiders.
Reproduction : From 2 or 3 years old, mating takes place between the end of March and May and sometimes even into the autumn. Ovoviviparous, the female births between 3 to 80 babies (usually 11 to 26) between July and September which are independent as soon as being born.
Lifespan : Up to 10 years in the wild.
Predators : Raccoons, skunks, red fox and lynx, as well as certain birds like buzzards, herons and crows. In water, it can also be the prey of certain fish and bullfrogs.
Status : Least concern, populations are stable.
