Diet : Herbivorous , feeding principally on aquatic plants.
Reproduction : Pairs for life at 4 years. Mating and egg laying occurs between April and early June . The 5-6 eggs are incubated by the female for 33-37 days. The young fledge after 100-120 days.
Lifespan : Up to 12 years in the wild and 35 years in captivity.
Predators : Eggs and/or young may be taken by large birds of prey, coyotes and mink.
Status : Not at risk . Removed from the list of vulnerable species in 1992.
