The zoo is keeping its fingers crossed that it will see polar bear cubs in early 2010.
Last April, the zoo staff observed repeated mating between Aisaqvaq and the male Inukshuk, now returned to his original zoo in Toronto. Since a pregnancy test for bears doesn’t exist, we have no certainty of knowing if Aisaqvaq is pregnant. However, we prefer to believe luck is on our side, and act as if she was pregnant by providing ideal conditions.
Aisaqvaq is now in a quieter home where a den has been placed at her disposal. She is monitored closely and treated with the respect that she deserves! Her twin sister Frimas, you can see her in the habitat, also mated with the male Inukshuk. She could also give us a surprise with the birth of cubs.
